Young Collectors’ Top Picks (November 2023)

Hi, it’s Hannah here! In a new series of blogs, I’m going to be featuring a selection of my tip picks for Young Collectors (and any other collectors!) from the wonderful artists and makers that we have the pleasure of working with here at Fen Ditton Gallery and the Young Collectors. All works are for sale and enquiries can be made at info@fendittongallery.com or via the buttons below.

Walk from Airport by Felix Higham
Etching, edition of 20, 19.5 x 23cm (image size)
£ 160 (unframed)

Emerging artist, Felix Higham, captures life and people, choosing to depict the intimate moments often observed from afar. Built from the foundations of observational drawings, his work brings to light the space when figures are unaware of or unresponsive to their surroundings - when they are in a transient state between person and object.

Since graduating from The Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School in 2021, Felix’s paintings and drawings have been acquired into private collections across the UK. This is the first time that Felix has produced an edition of prints and we are excited to have them exclusively available to purchase through the gallery.

Swimming Turtle by Roger Law

Screenprint, edition of 50, 40 x 58cm
£ 460 (unframed)

Roger Law was born and raised in the Cambridgeshire Fens and studied at Cambridge School of Art, where he met Peter Fluck, with whom he created the satirical TV series Spitting Image. After wrapping up Spitting Image, Roger moved to Australia to pursue artistic endeavours of a different sort – painting, drawing and ceramics – depicting the wildlife he encountered with his characteristic playful style. On returning to the UK, Roger moved to the North-Norfolk coast where he lives and works today.

A major exhibition of the Spitting Image archive has recently opened at the Cambridge University Library, where the archive is held.

Walking Man with Pipe by Stephen Bird
Glazed earthenware, 37 x 37cm
£ 1,200

I couldn’t choose my November top picks without including a work from our current ‘Going Yellow’ exhibition, and I couldn’t resist including this ceramic plate by Stephen Bird! Born in Stoke-on-Trent, he trained as a painter, before moving to Australia and developing a significant international reputation.

This piece was created specially for the ‘Going Yellow’ exhibition and is a fine example of Stephen’s narrative, playful work, using plates and platters as the canvas.
