He’s Going to New Orleans Tomorrow by Felix Higham, oil on canvas, 100 × 80cm
Fen Ditton Gallery is delighted to present a striking new body of work by emerging artist Felix Higham, in his debut solo exhibition Here and There.
For over a decade, contemporary figurative painter Felix Higham has quietly observed and recorded the shifting social landscapes of pubs and bars across London, Paris and his hometown of Cambridge. Working from the distinctive vantage point of behind the bar, Higham has developed an intimate visual study of human behaviour, capturing the characters, encounters and fleeting moments that collectively form the fabric of everyday social life. This exhibition brings together a compelling body of work that explores the relationship between people and the interiors they inhabit, revealing the pub as a place of both public performance and private introspection.
“Felix Higham’s colourful, impressionistic paintings portray people existing in a range of public spaces rendered private […] Thresholds feature heavily in this group of paintings: corridors, windows, doors are all portals into a more intimate space, offering a glimpse into an inner world. In these liminal, transient spaces […], the artist uses his sight lines and a backstage ‘behind the bar’ perspective to observe and render, playfully and affectionately, the public comings and goings of everyday life.”
