Graham Murrell

Former Head of Photography at Central St Martins College of Art, London, Murrell is a distinguished photographer. Widely published and exhibited, Murrell has worked on projects with organisations such as The New Art Centre, Roche Court, Kettles Yard and Blackwell Arts and Crafts House.

Murrell describes his approach to photography as ‘reductive’ and says “I am interested in the least amount of information that will result in pictures that are about ‘place’ rather than descriptive of it in the conventional sense.” His photographs are a construction of line and tone that seek to create a sense of balance, often around a central point, engaging with the tension of equilibrium between unequal values.

In June 2021, Fen Ditton Gallery exhibition an exhibition of photographs from the last 20 years of Graham Murrell’s photographic career. The exhibition, titled 20 Years On, was dedicated to the memory of the former Director of Kettle’s Yard, Michael Harrison, whose support and enthusiasm encouraged Murrell to leave his position at Central St Martins and focus on his own projects and exhibitions.
