Graham Murrell - County Mayo

The next exhibition of the Festival of Photography is a sensitive recording of County Mayo, Ireland, captured by Graham Murrell. These unseen photographs were taken during Murrell’s fellowship with the Ballinglen Arts Foundation Trust.

Former Head of Photography at Central St Martins College of Art, London, Murrell is a distinguished photographer. Widely published and exhibited, Murrell has worked on projects with organisations such as The New Art Centre, Roche Court, Kettles Yard and Blackwell Arts and Crafts House.

Murrell describes his approach to photography as ‘reductive’ and says “I am interested in the least amount of information that will result in pictures that are about ‘place’ rather than descriptive of it in the conventional sense.” His photographs are a construction of line and tone that seek to create a sense of balance, often around a central point, engaging with the tension of equilibrium between unequal values.

All photographs are handprinted and framed by Graham Murrell. Image sizes 225 x 225mm, framed size 425mm x 425mm. Please select an image to view full details and enquiries can be made to info@fendittongallery.com

We have been lucky enough to record a recent conversation with Graham. Here we spoke about his early transition from ceramics to photography, his thoughts on the importance of black and white photography in the contemporary art world and his next projects, when he can finally get out and about with his camera again.
