Fen Ditton Gallery is delighted to announce that Cambridge-based artist Niall MacCrann has been awarded the Contemporary Printmaking Prize 2026.
The winner was officially announced during the exhibition’s private view on Thursday 21st May, to a bustling crowd of artists, collectors, and invited guests to celebrate contemporary printmaking at its most innovative and compelling.
The exhibition features the work of 40 artists who were shortlisted for the prize, selected from over 500 entries, and is open to the public from the 23rd May – 14th June. The Contemporary Printmaking Prize highlights excellence in contemporary print practice, recognising both leading and emerging artists who demonstrate originality, technical accomplishment, and a distinctive visual voice.
Niall MacCrann’s winning print Someone’s Firebombed McQuaid’s Pharmacy was selected for its strength and ambition, standing out for its exceptional craftsmanship. Gallery Manager Hannah Munby comments: “We were all intrigued by Niall’s print, attracted to the strong narrative, as well as the fluidity and textures of the mark-making. His practice demonstrates a thoughtful engagement with the possibilities of the medium, balancing traditional print processes with a fresh and highly individual artistic perspective. The competition was really strong, but we felt that Niall’s work was a real talking point.”
This is the third prize of its type that independent gallery Fen Ditton Gallery have run, with the winner receiving £500 and the chance to be featured across the gallery’s platforms and popular podcast. It reflects the gallery’s ongoing commitment to supporting artists working within the medium of print and fostering dialogue around contemporary print practices.
The exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to experience a wide range of printmaking techniques and approaches, from traditional processes to experimental contemporary works, reinforcing the continuing vitality of printmaking today.
