David Stonehouse: Celadon Lidded Jar, 2024

£180.00

Reduction fired white stoneware, celadon glaze with iron wash details
17.5 (h) x 9.5 (w) x 9.5 (d) cm

Inversion jar/vase: Hand thrown and turned from white stoneware clay and coated in celadon glaze with iron wash details. Part of a series of reduction fired pieces exploring the aesthetic of firing wares upside down. Towards the end of the 12-hour firing, the oxides in the glaze produce these wonderful translucent grey-green surfaces, while the iron wash details form ethereal rivulets and the crystalline patterns under the lid.

About the artist

David Stonehouse (b. 1962) is a Cambridge-based artist-maker. His practice is informed by a sense of place and the inherent beauty of materials, and defined by an evolving personal aesthetic rooted in artisanal craftsmanship. His process is to scale back and let each element and material speak, to create objects that draw the user in to look closer and savour a given moment.
After gaining a degree in Silversmithing & Jewellery, he was studio assistant to RCA Professor David Watkins before completing an MA in Product Design at Central Saint Martin’s. He worked in international design before returning to his craft roots to make refined objects.
