Jim Partridge (b. 1953)
Jim Partridge, often working in partnership with Liz Walmsley, has established an internationally recognized practice grounded in a profound respect for wood and its expressive potential. Trained at the John Makepeace School for Craftsmen in Wood, Partridge has consistently sought to create objects and structures that unite utility with sculptural clarity. From scorched oak vessels to large-scale site-specific commissions, the work is characterized by a distilled simplicity, elemental strength, and a deep awareness of material integrity. Their practice moves fluidly between domestic scale and architectural intervention, producing works that resonate with both contemporary aesthetics and echoes of ancient craft traditions.
Public commissions, including seating for Compton Verney, the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley, and Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, exemplify their ability to integrate functional design with a sensitive response to place. Their studio works, held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and Manchester Art Gallery, reflect the same principles of restraint, endurance, and cultural resonance. Across the full range of their practice, Partridge and Walmsley seek to create what they describe as “a strong but quiet presence in the landscape,” an ethos that continues to define their contribution to contemporary craft and design.
