About the artist
Fi Brown is an artist based in Hastings, East Sussex, whose practice explores the relationship between landscape, materiality, and memory. Inspired by the shifting light and geological formations of the coastal Glens in Hastings Country Park, works such as Fairlight Glen draw on both direct observation and the visual language of geological mapping. Through printmaking and mixed-media processes, the artist combines defined shapes, territories, boundaries, and borders with more fluid, instinctive gestures, seeking moments of poetry within the tangible world.
Material processes play a central role in the development of the work. The stories, associations, and physical properties of materials often guide each piece, resulting in surfaces that balance delicacy with resilience. In Fairlight Glen, layers of polished cold wax, archival UV protection, wood grain, and semi-translucent paper interact to create an object that feels simultaneously fragile and enduring.
In 2024, the artist travelled to Japan to study the traditional practice of Japanese woodblock printmaking (Mokuhanga), an experience that continues to influence the direction of the work through its emphasis on craftsmanship, layering, and subtle tonal variation.
Originally from Holmfirth on the edge of the Pennines, the artist studied Fine Art in Liverpool and Public Art at Chelsea School of Art. Their work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, Ty Pawb International Print Exhibition, Wells Contemporary, the Royal West of England Academy, Rye Art Gallery, and Lido Stores Margate.
