Jun Tomita (b. 1951)
Jun Tomita is a master Japanese textile artist celebrated for his radical, painterly interpretation of kasuri (traditional Japanese ikat weaving). Following his foundational training in Japan, Tomita spent the late 1970s in the United Kingdom, where he studied under the influential British tapestry artist Mary Farmer and worked alongside master weaver Peter Collingwood. This crucial period bridged his eastern heritage with western abstract sensibilities, earning him a place as the first Japanese national selected for the British Crafts Council's Craftsman's Index.
His work is held in major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
