Mary Farmer (1940 - 2021)
Mary Farmer was an esteemed British textile artist and master weaver who advanced contemporary abstract craft from the late 1960s onward. Melding a formal painting background with rigorous weaving methods, Farmer created monumental, geometric tapestries and rugs that examined the interaction of colour and flat plane geometry. Her practice aimed for a "single clear statement," positioning tapestry as a serious medium within post-war abstraction.
Her works are held in premier public institutions, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the UK Government Art Collection. A distinguished educator, Farmer also directed the Tapestry Course at the Royal College of Art, profoundly influencing modern textile design.
